Look at these faces. Most of you will like them. And no wonder. The portraits were created on a computer by German psychologists Christoph Brown, Martin Gründl, Klaus Marberger and Christoph Sherber according to the scheme of ideal proportions they developed and will accept people who like the greatest number of people.
In a scientific paper called Beautycheck, psychologists set themselves two tasks: first, to find out what beauty is and what parameters it determines, and second, to determine the social consequences of attractiveness — how a person’s appearance affects others. Young scientists photographed 96 volunteers (8 models of them) aged 17 to 29 years. They were captured on a neutral background in white T-shirts. After that, more than 500 respondents from different strata of the population, representing different age categories, were to use the computer program created by scientists to assess the attractiveness of the people photographed on a seven-point scale, where 1 is the ugliest and 7 is the most beautiful person.
The experiment was conducted in 7 stages. Each time, scientists added portraits obtained using a splicing computer program or morphing to already existing real people. At the same time, the most spectacular faces were connected with each other, as well as the most repulsive faces "spliced" among themselves. The portraits were combined with the help of 500 points of contact (during the whole experiment, psychologists had to combine 75,000 points with each other).
Thanks to such a number of points of merging, the newly created faces were not inferior in their “realism” to living prototypes. Combining the portraits with each other, psychologists changed their proportions and the external cover (skin type). In particular, the images of women were modified according to the so-called children's scheme. At the same time, with the help of morphing, children's features were added to adult women: the head was enlarged, most of the face was retracted to the bulging forehead, the rest of the features were displaced somewhat downwards, the nose was reduced and shortened, the cheeks were rounded, the eyes were also made large and round.
It turned out that children's proportions (the skin of adults has not changed) add attractiveness to women. Even the most beautiful ones in comparison with their prototype modified according to the children's scheme are losing. Only 9.5% of the participants in the experiment were considered at the “change according to the children's scheme” stage as the most beautiful - real women. The majority preferred faces where children's traits ranged from 10 to 50%.
The attractiveness of the combination of childhood and maturity in a woman has a biological basis. In their scientific work, Brown, Grundl, Marberger and Scherber cite the following fact: men at the subconscious level prefer young girls, as they are more capable of childbearing, stay longer at childbearing age, respectively, can give birth to more children, to whom the man will pass on his genes . At the same time, mature traits signal to a man that a woman is no longer a child and can become a mother.
At the end of the experiment, scientists managed to find out the main set of features that a beautiful face should have. In women it is: dark or tanned smooth skin, narrow face shape, full, well-groomed lips, wide-set eyes, thin eyelids, thick, long and dark eyelashes, dark and thin eyebrows, high cheekbones, a small, narrow nose. For handsome men, interestingly, the same set plus a strong chin and a noticeable lower jaw are characteristic.
Meanwhile, it is worth noting that the totality of features in these photos in a living person is impossible. Thus, a woman has perfectly smooth skin, without flaws and wrinkles. Such cover can be created only on the computer. It was this “artificial skin” that the participants of the experiment recognized as the most spectacular. In addition, in the person of the winner, a mature man, there are features of a 14-year-old girl, which is also unrealistic. In general, this woman is absolutely not a natural product. Live beauty to compete with such computer excellence is almost impossible. Of the sixteen winners of a beauty contest arranged by scientists, only three were mere mortals. In the six leaders at the same time, real people were not hit. At the final stage of the experiment, experimental subjects were asked to assess the character of people whose faces were considered beautiful and, conversely, repulsive. The more spectacular the face turned out to be, the more successful, happier, more pleasant, more soulful, more intelligent, and more diligent was its owner. Beautiful people are credited with great creativity, touchingness, the ability to positively influence others. Owners of less likeable or even ugly people are denied these positive qualities by exclusively visual contact, they are classified as dissatisfied, arrogant, stupid or tired of life.
Thus, the social consequences of visual appeal are enormous. Beautiful people live easier. They have a head start when making contacts, looking for work, in personal life, in everyday life, in general - everywhere. Unfair, but true.
